How to Add Freon to a 1993 Toyota Camry V6

How to Add Freon to a 1993 Toyota Camry V6

As the air conditioning (A/C) compressor runs, it circulates freon through the system. When the refrigerant enters the evaporator under the dash, it absorbs heat from the passenger compartment and carries it to the condenser in front of the radiator. Once in the condenser, the refrigerant releases the heat to the outside air. Adding refrigerant to the A/C system in your 1993 Camry V-6 will restore lost cooling performance caused by small leaks in the system.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • A/C gauge set
  • Can tap
    • 1

Locate the A/C service ports on the high-pressure and low-pressure lines running down the passenger side fender well inside the engine compartment. Screw the high-pressure side adapter to the high-pressure service valve located on the small diameter line near the passenger side of the firewall. Attach the red hose on the gauge assembly to the adapter and the blue hose to the low-pressure service valve.

    • 2

Start the engine and turn on the A/C. Set the controls to maximum cooling and medium blower speed. Push the blue button on the dash control panel to turn on the A/C compressor.

    • 3

Screw the yellow hose on the gauge set to the freon tank. Open the valve on top of the tank by turning it counterclockwise until it is fully open. Open the blue, low-pressure valve on the front of the gauge set by turning it counterclockwise a few turns. Freon will flow into the A/C system when the blue valve on the gauge set is opened.

    • 4

Close the blue valve after 15 seconds and monitor the pressure readings on the gauges. Add freon in this manner until the blue, low-pressure gauge reads 30 to 35 psi and the red, high-pressure gauge reads 250 to 300 psi.

    • 5

Turn off the engine and disconnect the gauges and high-pressure adapter. Test drive the car to verify that the A/C system functions properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is illegal to vent any kind of refrigerant to the atmosphere. If the A/C system in your car still contains refrigerant, have a qualified repair technician remove it prior to making repairs.
