Toyota Camrys are known for their owner loyalty as well as for the minimal maintenance required. However, periodically parts wear out on these cars just as they do on all others. When a starter begins sticking or not working at all, it is time to replace it and an owner with a minimal amount of mechanical experience can do this job themselves, saving money as well as enjoying the satisfaction of a job well done.

things you'll need:

  • Starter
  • Metric socket set w/ ratchet
  • Metric wrench set
  1. Replacing the starter

    • 1

Park the car on a level surface and set the parking brake.

    • 2

Open the hood, then, using the appropriate size wrench, remove first the negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable, from the battery.

Set them to the side as they are removed, being careful they do not touch metal.

    • 3

Using the wrench, remove the two nuts from the battery restraint bar, then lift it off and remove the battery.

    • 4

Next, remove the battery tray and restraint system.

    • 5

Locate the cruise control actuator behind the battery's location. It has a black, plastic cover over it. Carefully unsnap the cover by hand. The actuator has a wiring harness attached to it using a quick connect plug. Unsnap the retaining tab and remove the wiring harness from the actuator.

    • 6

Use a wrench or ratchet and socket to remove the bolts holding the actuator in place, then remove the actuator from the car.

    • 7

The starter is located just below where the cruise control actuator was mounted. Unsnap the two wiring harnesses from the starter by unsnapping the connectors with your fingers.

    • 8

Remove the battery cable from the starter with a wrench or ratchet and socket.

    • 9

The starter is held in place by two retaining bolts. Remove them from the starter using the ratchet and socket. Lift the starter from the engine compartment.

    • 10

Install new starter in the same location the old one was removed from. Replace the two retaining bolts.

    • 11

Attach the battery cable to the new starter.

    • 12

Plug the wiring harnesses back in, making sure they "click" as you seat them.

    • 13

      Reinstall the cruise control actuator.

    • 14

Plug the wiring harness back into the cruise control actuator.

    • 15

Replace the plastic cover over the actuator.

    • 16

Install the battery tray back into its' original location with the mounting bolts.

    • 17

Place the battery back into the tray.

    • 18

Install the battery retaining bar to hold the battery in place.

    • 19

Reattach the positive battery cable, then the negative battery cable.

    • 20

      Close hood.
