Reducing oil leaks will help keep your engine clean and running well.

Replacing the valve cover gasket on your 1990 Toyota Camry is a relatively easy introduction to gasket and seal maintenance. The valve cover is usually one of the first seals to start leaking oil, which will dirty your engine quickly. Replacing the valve cover gasket will keep your engine clean and help to ensure that you have the correct level of oil in your car.

Moderate

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Socket wrench and socket adapters
  • Valve cover gasket replacement
  • Silicone
  • Screwdriver
  • Lint-free rag
    • 1

Open the hood of your 1990 Toyota Camry. If your hood does not stay open by itself, you will need to find an item to prop it open, so that it does not fall on your while trying to work on the engine.

    • 2

Use your socket wrench to unbolt the valve cover on your 1990 Toyota Camry. The valve cover will be near the front-middle section of the engine and sits on top of everything else. It is a rectangular, blocky piece of metal that will most likely have evidence of oil leakage. There are only two bolts for the valve cover. Make sure that you put the bolts in a place where you will not lose or forget where you put them.

    • 3

Remove the old gasket from inside the valve cover. If the gasket is dry-rotted, then you can use a flat-head screwdriver to pry up the old pieces of the gasket. Clean the valve cover as much as possible and make sure that there are no pieces of the old gasket left on the valve cover.

    • 4

Run a bead of silicone along the inside lip of the valve cover where the old gasket used to be. The silicone will help the new gasket to bond and seal with the valve cover.

    • 5

Install the new valve cover gasket on your Toyota Camry valve cover. Do this by starting at one end of the gasket and making sure that all of the slack is out and the gasket is stretched to fit all the way around the valve cover. Wipe away any excess silicone once the gasket is placed in the lip of the valve cover.

    • 6

Bolt the valve cover back into place. If there is any silicone excess oozing out from the valve cover of your Camry, then wipe it away with a rag. Allow the silicone about an hour to dry properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that the car is not too hot when you start working on it. The valve cover where the oil is stored and pumped throughout the rest of the engine and gets hot quickly when the car is running.

  • If the bolts are stuck, then you may need to use a torque wrench for added leverage. Torque wrenches can usually be rented from most auto parts stores.
