How to Change Steering Wheels on 2004 Toyota Camrys

A number of aftermarket options are available if you want to replace the steering wheel on your 2004 Toyota Camry. You can fit smaller steering wheels or steering wheels with different shapes and designs or install a new Toyota factory steering wheel to replace a broken or worn one. Make sure the wheel you purchase fits on the 2004 Camry before attempting to change it and be very careful working around the air bag.

  • Torx screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Steering wheel puller
  • Torque wrench

      Park the 2004 Camry on a level surface and set the parking brake. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the steering wheel so the vehicle's wheels point straight ahead.

      Pull the cover from the steering arm. Grab it with one hand on each crease and pull down sharply to remove it.

      Remove the screws holding the air bag module in place with a Torx screwdriver. Unplug the electrical connection to the air bag module and remove it from the steering wheel. Unplug the electrical connections for the horn and cruise control.

      Remove the steering wheel retaining nut with a socket wrench. Attach a steering wheel puller to the shaft and remove the steering wheel.

      Attach the new steering wheel to the shaft and tighten the retaining nut to 27 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.

      Connect the horn and cruise control electrical connections if they're available on the new steering wheel. Mount the air bag and secure the mounting bolts with a socket wrench. Plug in the air bag's electrical connection. Place the steering arm cover in position and push it in until the retaining clips snap into position.
